The Story of Northminster
Northminster Presbyterian Church began its journey on October 29, 1954 when a small group gathered to discuss the organization of a Town and Country area Presbyterian Church. That group later quickly called Rev. Robert N. McLean, Jr. (the upper right photo) to be their pastor. The name of the church at that time was Town and Country Presbyterian Church. The church's present name was adopted on November 20, 1955 at the Service of Organization where the future home of the church, 3235 Pope Avenue was announced.
The church's first worship space was a rental home (see the upper left photo) used for Sunday worship as well as children's, youth, and adult classes. The church grew quickly, the present property was purchased and the first phase of the campus was built (see the lower left picture). In 1966 the campus was expanded with a new larger sanctuary to minister to a growing congregation (lower right picture). Fellowship remained the heart of Northminster from the intimate community inside the rental house to the numerous Marinership Groups hosted at several homes across Arden-Arcade as the church grew, and several affinity groups that connect people in shared passions like the Mellow Milers and the Sewing and Looming groups.
Throughout Northminster's history the church has served its community, leading in ministries like the Brown Bag ministry, which offers grocery resources, partnership with Dyer-Kelly Elementary School to resource families and teachers alike with school supplies, participating in TESOL programs, and supporting missioners in cross-cultural labors. At one time Northminster also owned and operated a large family campground as a way to offer a resource of rest and spiritual refreshment. As you visit Northminster, you will meet a church family with a wonderful history of fellowship, service, and worship. We look forward to meeting you soon!
